♢— Nostalgia

Cloud is quite a nostalgic person. Having already lost a part of himself via mako poisoning and (essentially) getting screwed in the head by JENOVA and Sephiroth, what he remembers of his past is still somewhat sketchy. Day after day he continues to slowly recover the memories he lost during his time as a teenager, either involving his time in the labs or the years spent before the fated mission in Nibelheim. Due to such, a rather large part of his life still remains blurry to him, thus creating a sense of insecurity towards his own memories. As an attempt to remedy this in the case of a similar event ever happening again, Cloud very much enjoys collecting memorabilia of the places he travels to, the people he knows, and items that may hold substantial meaning to him.
Seen about his work desk is the proof of such a collection. He especially enjoys the act of taking and collecting photographs, for they provide a visual reminder of what he either has presently or what he used to have in the past. Currently his most favored photographs are those of his ‘family of friends’, both of which have been framed and arranged as the centerpiece to his visual collection. Otherwise, images captured via his phones camera scatter the table and walls of his small room in 7th Heaven, most of which are views of the numerous landscapes he passes by during deliveries. Said photos are usually taken on his quick breaks while on the road, either during snack pit-stops or simply due to purposely stopping to take in the view.
Having grown up in the countryside, Cloud is quite fond of nature and the recovering beauty that the Planet offers; as well as the opportunity to temporarily leave the monotony of the city to view such things only increases the value of his travel-based job. However, this is not a hobby in which he takes much pride in, nor would converse with others about. To him, it’s something personal and thus something he’d rather keep to himself— his own collection of back-up memories, in a way.
(Interestingly enough, it appears as though he especially favors views of flower fields and large meadows, perhaps signifying a connection to Aerith, or reflecting what he would view as a personal Promised Land.)

“I’ll protect you with my life.”

He knows Denzel means well with the words he speaks, but they leave a bitter taste in his mouth nonetheless.

        Cloud does not need protection.

                       Cloud does not want protection.

Not when such apparent selfless acts have previously cost him loved ones, desperate to give him a future with the cost of their own, no matter how seemingly empty said future is without them in his life. He hates the fact that he’d been unable to stop Zack from taking those bullets for him. He hates the fact that Aerith had been cut down during an attempt to aid the Planet itself despite his desire to keep them all together. The murder of someone you care for greater than anything is the worst feeling he’s ever experienced even through the muck and turmoil of everything else— and there is no way in hell he is allowing such sacrifices to occur again.

Years have past since Geostigma and the fall of the Remnants and Denzel has grown up; a near-adult with strengths and incredible amounts of potential. Their lives have become intertwined, and long ago had Cloud begun seeing the boy as something more than just an orphan he’d happened to bring home but a member of his family. A boy he’s proud to call his son—

And in no way would a father wish to outlive his child.

       ❝My life is my family,

Cloud words are hushed as though indescribably private; and a warm palm rests atop Denzel’s shoulder as if to express the fact that he’s grateful yet— reluctant.

❝—So focus on protectin’ yourself, okay?

He can’t lose anyone else.
